Hunts Point tanker

The Hunts Point sewer tanker, one of three new sludge ships being built for the NYC DEP, has entered service. The tankers are essential to the wastewater treatment process and never leave city waters on their journeys among sewage treatment facilities. In fact, over the past 20 years, no treated waste has been dumped in the ocean. The Hunts Point is the first of three identical new sludge ships to enter service. The vessel leaves Wards Island docks in ballast and loads partly dewatered waste.

The Hunts Point sewer tanker is now a symbol of the city’s sewage treatment plan. Community activists were angry about the odors emitted from the former facility and cheered when the Hunts Point facility closed. However, the NYOFCO bid for a new contract spooked community activists. The DEP has scheduled a public hearing on the contract with WeCare Organics on Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at DEP headquarters in Flushing, Queens. City Comptroller John Liu will review the deal.
